XL Twin Duvet Cover Size & Fabric Requirements

Bed Size Finished Size (inches) Fabric Needed* Notes
XL Twin Approximately 68" x 92" 8 yds (54" wide) Pieced front with overlapping envelope back

*Fabric allowance includes panel seaming, French seams, back overlap hems, and a small amount of extra fabric for squaring up. For large-scale or directional prints, order additional yardage for pattern matching.

Pre-washing fabrics printed by The Textile District is not necessary! Our printing process locks the color deep within the fibers and creates soft, vibrant, colorfast fabric by the yard that is ready to sew and enjoy.

If sewing with fabrics from other sources, it is best to wash before cutting for best results.

Supplies Needed

  • 8 yards custom-printed cotton, linen, or sateen fabric (54" wide)
  • Coordinating thread
  • Rotary cutter or scissors
  • Measuring tape and pins or clips
  • Sewing machine
  • Optional: snaps, buttons, or twill tape ties if you want extra security at the back overlap

Cutting Instructions (XL Twin)

  • Front Center Panel: Cut 1 piece 54" x 93½"
  • Front Side Panels: Cut 2 pieces 7½" x 93½"
  • Back Panels: Cut 2 pieces 39" x 93½"

This layout is designed for 54" wide fabric. Sew one side panel to each long edge of the front center panel to create the full front. The two back panels remain separate and overlap to form the envelope opening.

For large prints or directional designs, keep the print running in the same direction on all panels and align motifs as closely as possible before sewing.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Sew the Front Panel

With right sides together, sew one 7½" x 93½" side panel to each long edge of the 54" x 93½" front center panel using a ½" seam allowance. Press seams open or to one side. This creates your full duvet front.

2. Match the Pattern

Lay out the front panel and the two back panels right side up. If you are working with a directional or large-scale print, check motif placement before continuing so the finished duvet cover looks balanced and intentional.

3. Hem the Back Panel Openings

On one long edge of each back panel, turn under ½", then turn again by 1" to create a clean double-fold hem. Press well and topstitch close to the inner fold. These hemmed long edges will form the envelope-style opening on the back of the duvet cover.

4. Assemble the Back

Lay the two back panels right side up, overlapping the hemmed long edges by approximately 6". Adjust until the assembled back is the same size as the pieced front panel. Pin or clip in place, then baste across the top and bottom edges within the seam allowance to hold the overlap securely.

5. Sew with French Seams

  • Place the front panel and assembled back panel wrong sides together, matching all outer edges.
  • Stitch around all four sides with a ⅜" seam allowance.
  • Trim seam allowances to ⅛", press seams flat, and turn the duvet cover inside out so right sides are together.
  • Stitch again around all four sides with a ¼" seam allowance to fully enclose the raw edges.

French seams create a durable, professional finish—perfect for bedding that gets frequent washes.

6. Finish the Envelope Opening

Remove any visible basting stitches if needed and check that the back overlap opens smoothly for inserting the duvet. If you want extra hold, you can add a few snaps, buttons, or twill tape ties along the overlap, but they are optional.
