Step-by-Step Instructions

Aligning fleece fabrics right sides together

Step 1: Prep and Cut the Fabric
Lay both fleece fabrics flat, right sides facing each other. Smooth out wrinkles, align edges, and trim evenly. A good size for baby blankets is 36" x 36" or 36" x 42".

Pinning the fleece fabric around the edges

Step 2: Pin the Layers
Use clips or pins to secure the fleece layers around all four sides. Be sure to leave a 5–6 inch opening on one edge to allow for turning the blanket later.

Sewing the fleece blanket around the edges

Step 3: Sew Around the Edges
Using a ½" seam allowance, sew around the entire blanket. Backstitch at the beginning and end. Do not sew the opening shut yet—you’ll need it to turn the blanket right side out.

Trimming corners of sewn fleece blanket

Step 4: Trim the Corners
Clip each corner diagonally, being careful not to cut the stitching. This helps reduce bulk and creates sharper corners when turned right side out.

Step 5: Turn and Smooth
Turn the blanket right side out through the gap. Use a blunt tool like a large plastic crochet hook to push out the corners. Smooth and flatten the seams with your hands.

Topstitching the edge of the fleece blanket

Step 6: Topstitch to Finish
Fold in the edges of the opening and topstitch around the entire blanket ⅛" from the edge. This gives the blanket a polished look and keeps the layers in place.

Customizing Your Blanket for Gift Giving

For New Parents & Babies

  • Choose soft pastels, nature-inspired prints, polka dots, stars, or alphabet patterns.
  • Mix solids and subtle textures (like clouds, chevrons, or baby animals) for a soothing, stylish look.
  • Consider bundling with matching handmade items like burp cloths, bibs, or a lovey square for a complete baby shower gift.

For Sports Enthusiasts

  • Use fabric in team-inspired color palettes (e.g., navy and orange, green and gold).
  • Opt for geometric prints, stripes, or plaids that nod to a team without using logos.
  • Perfect for tailgating, game nights, or cozy evenings at home—great for college students, too!

For Tweens and Teens

  • Pick modern or trendy prints like checkerboards, animal prints, florals, or minimalist shapes.
  • Match their favorite colors or patterns that reflect their personality—think bold, moody, pastel, or cottagecore.
  • Add a monogrammed tag, decorative stitching, or even sew-on patches to make it feel one-of-a-kind.

With just a little creativity, you can make a beautiful fleece blanket that’s as unique as the person receiving it — warm, personal, and 100% handmade with love.
