Twin XL Duvet Cover Size and Fabric Requirements
This tutorial is written for a duvet cover that finishes at approximately 68" x 92", a practical size for many Twin XL duvet inserts commonly used in dorm rooms. Before cutting, measure your insert and adjust slightly if needed.
- Finished duvet cover size: Approximately 68" x 92"
- Fabric required for duvet cover: 10½ yards of fabric with approximately 54" usable width
- Additional fabric for matching pillowcase: 1 yard
- Total fabric for both projects: 11½ yards
This yardage allows for panel seaming, French seams, envelope-back overlap, and basic trimming. If you want more flexibility for stripe placement or exact visual balancing, ordering a little extra fabric can be helpful.
Fabrics printed by The Textile District do not need to be pre-washed before sewing. Our natural fiber fabrics are steamed, washed, and dried as part of the finishing process, giving them a soft hand and excellent wash-and-wear performance.
Recommended Fabric Bases and Supplies

Cotton Quilt is also appropriate for this project, but keep in mind that the printable width is 42" so you will need to adjust your quantities and sewing plan.
Supplies Needed:
- 10½ yards of Cabana Coastal fabric by the yard for the duvet cover
- 1 additional yard for the matching pillowcase
- Coordinating thread
- Rotary cutter and mat or fabric scissors
- Long ruler or straightedge
- Measuring tape
- Pins or clips
- Sewing machine
- Iron and ironing surface
- Optional: twill tape for interior duvet ties
- Optional: snaps, buttons, or ties for the back opening
Cutting Instructions
The duvet front is pieced from one full-width center panel and two side panels. The back is made from two overlapping panels that create the envelope opening.
Cut the following pieces for the duvet cover:
- Front Center Panel: Cut 1 piece 54" x 93¼"
- Front Side Panels: Cut 2 pieces 8¾" x 93¼"
- Back Panels: Cut 2 pieces 40" x 93¼"
Cut the following piece for the pillowcase:
- Pillowcase Body: Cut 1 piece 42" x 33"
Because Cabana Coastal is a stripe, take a few extra minutes to keep the stripe direction consistent on every cut piece. This is one of the details that makes the finished project look intentional and professionally sewn.
How to Sew the Twin XL Duvet Cover
Step 1: Sew the duvet front.
Place one side panel along each long edge of the center panel with right sides together. Stitch using a ½" seam allowance. Press the seams well. Once both side panels are attached, square the completed front and trim to approximately 69¼" x 93¼".
Step 2: Check stripe placement.
Before moving on, lay the duvet front flat and review the spacing of the stripes across the full width. With a stripe, visual balance matters. A few minutes spent checking the layout now will make the finished duvet feel more polished on the bed.
Step 3: Hem the envelope-back edges.
On one long edge of each back panel, turn under ½" and press. Turn again by 1" and press to create a clean double-fold hem. Topstitch close to the inner fold on both panels.
Step 4: Assemble the overlapping back.
Lay both back panels right side up, overlapping the hemmed long edges by approximately 7¾". Adjust until the assembled back matches the size of the duvet front at about 69¼" x 93¼". Pin or clip in place, then baste across the top and bottom edges within the seam allowance.
Step 5: Add optional corner ties.
If desired, baste a short length of twill tape at each interior corner. These ties can be attached to your insert to help reduce shifting inside the duvet cover.
Step 6: Sew the first pass of the French seams.
Place the duvet front and assembled back wrong sides together, matching all outer edges carefully. Stitch around all four sides with a ⅜" seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance to approximately ⅛".
Step 7: Enclose the raw edges.
Turn the duvet cover inside out so right sides are together. Press the outer edges well, then stitch around all four sides again with a ¼" seam allowance. This encloses the raw edges inside the French seam for a neat, durable finish.
Step 8: Turn, press, and finish.
Turn the duvet cover right side out through the envelope opening. Push out the corners, press thoroughly, and check that the back overlap lies flat. If you want extra security, you can add optional snaps, ties, or buttons at the overlap.
French seams are a great choice for bedding because they create a clean interior finish and hold up beautifully to repeat washing.
How to Sew the Matching Pillowcase
A coordinating pillowcase is a simple way to complete the bedding set and make the whole bed feel more finished.
Step 1: Hem the opening.
On one 42" edge of the pillowcase body, turn under ½" and press. Turn under again by 2", press, and topstitch close to the inner fold.
Step 2: Fold the pillowcase.
Fold the fabric in half with wrong sides together, aligning raw edges and keeping the hemmed opening at the top.
Step 3: Sew the first seam.
Stitch the long side and bottom edge using a ⅜" seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance to approximately ⅛".
Step 4: Finish the French seam.
Turn the pillowcase inside out so right sides are together. Press the stitched edges and sew again with a ¼" seam allowance to enclose the raw edges. Turn right side out and press well.
