Four-way stretch means the fabric stretches both across the width and along the length.

How Poly Spandex 4-Way Knit Is Printed
The Textile District’s Poly Spandex 4-Way Knit is printed using sublimation, a process designed for polyester fibers.
Rather than placing a heavy coating on the surface, sublimation transfers the design into the polyester fibers using heat. This helps preserve the fabric’s smooth hand and stretch while producing clear, vibrant printed color.
This is different from the fiber-reactive dye process we use for natural-fiber fabrics such as cotton and linen.
Tips for Sewing Poly Spandex Knit
Stretch fabrics require a few adjustments compared with sewing woven cottons or linens.
- Use a ballpoint or stretch needle designed for knit fabrics.
- Use a stretch stitch, narrow zigzag or serger construction so the seams can move with the fabric.
- Avoid stretching the fabric as it feeds through the machine.
- Test stitch settings on a scrap before sewing the finished garment.
- Use clips or fine pins carefully so the knit remains smooth and undistorted.
- Follow your pattern’s recommendations for seam allowance, elastic and lining.
For fitted swimwear, many patterns also call for swimwear elastic and a suitable stretch lining. Follow the pattern instructions carefully because construction methods vary by garment style.
Check the Stretch Before Cutting
Before cutting your pattern pieces, identify the direction of greatest stretch and compare it with the stretch direction specified by your sewing pattern.
Also check the printed design before cutting. Directional florals, stripes or other motifs should be oriented consistently across the garment unless the design intentionally calls for variation.
If you are using a large-scale print, consider how the motifs will fall across the front, back and individual pattern pieces before making the first cut.
Choose the Right Print Scale for Swimwear
Print scale can noticeably change the look of a swimsuit.
Smaller repeats tend to distribute pattern more evenly across small pattern pieces, while larger florals, botanicals and geometrics can create stronger focal areas.
For bikinis and garments made from multiple small pieces, check how much of the repeat will be visible within each pattern section. For one-piece swimsuits, larger motifs may have more room to read clearly.
