About The Textile District
What is The Textile District?
The Textile District is an online design showroom and fabric retailer offering artist-designed fabric and custom fabric printing by the yard. We work with professional designers, quilting shops, custom clothiers, small-batch manufacturers, interior designers, and home sewists looking for distinctive fabric and expert support.
Do you have a physical store location?
No. The Textile District is an online-only fabric store, but our office and custom fabric printing services are based in Charlotte, North Carolina. If you need help with a project, fabric selection, or a custom order, our team is available through our Contact Us page.
What makes The Textile District different from a traditional fabric store?
The Textile District offers the flexibility of made-to-order fabric with the support of an experienced textile team. Instead of choosing from a limited inventory of pre-printed bolts or rolls, customers can select the design, colorway, and base fabric that best fits their project.
- Custom flexibility: Choose from artist-designed fabrics or print your own design.
- Wide range of base fabrics: Find options for apparel, quilting, home décor, upholstery, accessories, and more.
- Expert guidance: Get help with substrate selection, custom printing questions, and project planning.
- Made-to-order production: Order for a specific project without relying on limited pre-printed inventory.
- Professional results: Our process is designed for strong color, clear detail, and a soft, usable finish.
Who do you work with?
We work with a broad mix of customers, including professional designers, fabric shops, small businesses, manufacturers, upholsterers, furniture restoration professionals, and DIY sewists. Some customers come to us for a single custom project, while others use The Textile District as an ongoing fabric resource.
Ordering & Custom Fabric Printing
How do I purchase fabric from The Textile District?
You can browse our online catalog to shop artist-designed fabrics, then choose the design, colorway, and base fabric that works best for your project. Because designs are digitally stored, they are available to print on the base fabrics we offer, subject to current substrate availability.
Can I get fabric printed with my own design?
Yes. The Textile District offers custom fabric printing by the yard using your artwork on the base fabrics we carry. If you are planning a custom project, visit our Custom Fabric, Custom Fabric Pricing, and Design Resources pages to learn more.
Can you help me choose the right base fabric?
Absolutely. Choosing the right substrate is one of the most important parts of a successful order. You can compare options on our Our Fabrics page, order a Ground Fabric Swatch Kit to see and feel the fabrics in person, and contact us if you would like guidance for a specific end use.
What website tools can help me order more confidently?
The Textile District offers several resources to help customers compare fabrics, evaluate color, and plan a custom project:
- Our Fabrics: Compare base fabric details, pricing, printable width, and recommended uses.
- Ground Fabric Swatch Kit: Review unprinted fabric samples to compare hand, weight, weave, and drape.
- Color Library: Use a printed color reference to make more informed color decisions.
- Design Tools: Explore resources that support better planning before you order.
- Design Resources: Learn more about design prep, file setup, and custom printing basics.
How much does fabric cost?
Pricing varies by base fabric. Our Our Fabrics page is the best place to compare current options, including print pricing, fabric specifications, and suggested end uses. If you are sourcing for a specialty project, hospitality application, or larger custom requirement, please contact us directly.
Can you help with large, commercial, or specialty projects?
Yes. In addition to standard website orders, we can help with larger custom projects and certain specialty requirements. If you need guidance on substrate options, finishing considerations, or order planning, please contact our team with the details of your project.
Can you print more than a few yards?
Yes. The Textile District can accommodate larger quantities, and volume pricing is available at qualifying yardage levels on the same substrate. For larger custom requirements, please reach out so we can help you plan the best approach.
Can I supply my own fabric for printing?
Customer-supplied fabric is not part of our standard offering. In some cases, special projects may be considered depending on the scope and requirements. If you have a project in mind, send us the details through our Contact Us page.
Fabric Quality, Color & Care
Do you print on colored fabrics?
All of our base fabrics are white, and color is printed onto the fabric. This helps provide the best possible clarity and consistency from our digital fabric printing process.
What kind of dyes do you use?
The Textile District uses fiber-reactive dyes in our digital fabric printing process for applicable substrates. These dyes are chosen for their ability to produce rich color, clear detail, and a soft finished feel.
Is your process eco-conscious?
Yes. Our process is OEKO-TEX® certified, and our made-to-order production model supports more intentional ordering by helping reduce excess inventory.
What fabrics do you print on?
We offer a wide range of base fabrics selected for custom printing across many end uses, including apparel, quilting, home décor, upholstery, and accessories. Visit our Our Fabrics page for current fabric options, specifications, and usage recommendations.
How do I know which colors will print best?
Screen color is only an approximation of the printed result. Color can appear differently from one monitor to another, and the same design may look different from one base fabric to another. For the most reliable preview, we recommend ordering a test print on your chosen substrate whenever color is critical.
Will my printed fabric look exactly like it does on my screen?
Not exactly. Monitor calibration, screen brightness, and fabric type all influence how color is perceived. Natural fibers, blends, and synthetic fabrics can each affect the final appearance, which is why sampling is the best way to confirm color and scale before placing a larger order.
Is the fabric colorfast?
Our printing process is designed to produce project-ready fabric with strong, lasting color under normal use and care. As with any textile product, long-term performance depends on the fabric type, end use, laundering method, and level of wear.
How should I care for my fabric?
Care recommendations vary by substrate, so it is important to review the guidance for the specific fabric you are considering. If your project has particular care requirements, our team can help you choose the most suitable base fabric before you order.
Does the fabric shrink?
Some shrinkage is normal in textile production and care, and performance can vary by substrate. We recommend reviewing the care information for the specific base fabric you choose and allowing for normal fabric behavior when planning your project.
Do you print stretch fabrics?
Yes. We offer a polyester spandex 4-way stretch knit for projects that call for flexibility, recovery, and comfortable movement, including swim, dance, activewear, and other fitted garments. Our fabrics are printed to order, so you do not need to wait for a design to come back in stock. For fabric details and specifications, please visit our Our Fabrics page.
Shipping & Returns
Do you ship internationally?
The Textile District currently ships within the United States and Canada. If you have questions about shipping or are unable to check out, please contact our customer service team for assistance.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping cost depends on the items in your order and the delivery destination. The best way to estimate shipping is to add items to your cart and proceed through checkout, where available shipping options will appear before payment is submitted.
Do you accept returns?
Because fabric is printed on demand for each order, returns are not accepted unless we made an error. If you have questions about a design, colorway, or base fabric before ordering, we are happy to help.
Designer Program
Do you have a Designer Program?
Yes. The Textile District offers a Designer Program for artists who want to sell their work as custom printed fabric by the yard. It is designed to help surface pattern designers and artists launch collections without the large inventory commitment required by traditional fabric production.
Where can I learn more about the Designer Program?
You can learn more on our Designer Program page. If you are interested in joining, we would love to hear from you.
